Policy Terms & Limits

Occurrence Policy

A policy that covers incidents that happen during the policy period, even if the claim is filed years later.

An occurrence policy responds based on when the loss occurred, not when the claim is filed. If an event happens while the policy is active, it is covered even if someone sues years afterward. Most general liability policies are occurrence-based.

This is why occurrence-based general liability is preferred for construction: damage from completed work can surface long after a project ends, and the policy in force at the time of the work still responds.
