Policy Terms & Limits

Claims-Made Policy

A policy that covers claims only if they are both made and reported while coverage is active, common for professional liability.

A claims-made policy responds only to claims first made during the policy period (and reported per its terms), regardless of when the underlying event happened, as long as it was after the retroactive date. Professional liability and pollution coverage are often written this way.

The catch for GCs is continuity: if a sub drops a claims-made policy after the job, a later claim may have no coverage. Tail coverage or extended reporting periods address this gap.
