Policy Limit

Also known as: Coverage Limit, Limit of Liability

The maximum amount an insurance policy will pay for a covered loss, set per occurrence and in aggregate.

Policy limits define the most an insurer will pay. They are expressed as a per-occurrence figure and an aggregate figure, and sometimes with sub-limits for specific coverages like products-completed operations or damage to rented premises.

Matching a sub's limits to your contract's required minimums is the heart of COI review. Limits that look adequate at a glance can fall short once you account for shared aggregates or excluded coverages.
